My Gear My Gear

Well I figured putting my gear out here would help you get to know me a little better. I am very serious about music, hopefully you can see that in my choice of gear. I know that everyone will not necessarily like the same gear as I do, but that is what makes playing so much fun. You find the gear you like, then shape your sound around it. When you want a change, clean house and go gear hunting again :)

Here is the current line up of gear that I am playing on when I get the time. I have a mix of old and new guitars, and a couple of good tube amps. I also have a few effects that I like to color my sound with.

1959 Gibson Les Paul Historic
1959 Gibson Les Paul Historic Purchased this one from a friend at the end of 2003 as a Christmas gift to myself :) It is one of Gibsons Historic Re-Issues of a classic guitar. The 1959 LP. Wow. This one weighs just a few ounces over 8lbs. Not many out there that light. The feel is awesome, and the pick-ups are phenomenal. I have to re-dial my amp when switching to this guy. It requires almost no boost from my Full Drive to get a little dirt out of the amp. For strings. Everly 10s. I am thinking of going to 11s and setting this one up for slide ala Allman Brothers.
1954 Relic Re-Issue Stratocastor
1954 Relic Re-Issue Stratocastor Another gift to myself at the end of 2003. I got both pieces from the same guy. His loss, my gain :) I have never owned a Strat, or even played one much in my 25+ years of playing. I was missing something. This is an incredible guitar and gives my goldtop a run for its money. The neck is fat and feels really good. The growl that comes from the bridge pick-up is awesome. This guitar is equally at home with stones flavored roots rock or Vince Gill style twang. It is a great guitar for playing worship music with.
1959 Gibson Les Paul Special
1959 Gibson Les Paul Special This one is a real beauty. It is an original 1959 Gibson Les Paul Special. The soap bar P90s on this thing really cut through the mix. I currently have a set of Gibson GVR10s (vintage re-issue) on it and it seems to suit it pretty well. I really like the sound of it through my vox. Dial the master and volume to 12, the treble to about 10 and the bass to about 2 and it just sings.
1970 Gibson Les Paul Deluxe Gold Top
1970 Gibson Deluxe Gold Top Les Paul This guitar had been sitting in a guys basement for almost 20 years! He said he played it maybe twice a year :(. The gold top is extremely checked. It looks beautiful. It is a little on the heavy side ~10 lbs. But I still love playing it. The sustain is incredible and the bite I get from the mini humbuckers is just great. I also prefer to play this one throught the vox. I set the volume a little hotter with this guitar. It is proably my favorite to play at the moment.
2002 PRS CE22
PRS CE 22 What can I say? I love the feel of the Paul Reed Smith Guitars. The pickups on this are considerably hotter than either of my Pauls. The CE22 is a 22 fret with a bolt on neck. It has great feel and tone. This one has the toggle switch with a coil tap on the tone knob to get that tinny strat sound. It has the standard neck ans PRSs Dragon II pickups.
2002 PRS Custom 24 10 Top
PRS Custom 24 - 10Top This one is very special to me as my wife got it for me Christmas 2002. It was a total suprise to me. I was blown away. It is a custom 24 10 Top that is absolutly gorgeous. The pickups on this are just a little bit hotter than the ones on the CE. When switching to either of the PRSs from one of the Pauls, I have to drop my volume about a click and half on the amp. Small sacrifice :) I kind of prefer playng the PRSs through my Fender as it has a little more dirt and these guitars kind of prefer that sound.
Mid 1980s Fender Deluxe Reverb II
Mid 80s Fender Deluxe Reverb II This is a great little 20 watt class A amp that I have had since the mid 80s (purchased new). It was only in production for about 2 years. I believe Fender was shooting for a Marshall sound with this one as channel 2 has a master volume and a gain. It can get very nasty. Not many other controls. Very simply to operate, just a great sounding amp. It of course has the inimitable Fender reverb that I would hate to live without. For many years it was the only effect I used :) I typically use this guy when I want a dirtier sound. It does however sound equally good when the gain is turned down to get that Fender clean sound.
Late 1990s Vox AC15
RI (korg) Vox AC15 This is a 15 watt class C amp that really rocks. It can get loud, but not so loud that you are afraid to run it wide open. Very simple to operate. One channel, Reverb and Tremelo Volume, Master, Bass and Treble. I do not tweak with the settings much. I tend to run the input volume control at either 12 or 3 depending on how much bite I want it to have. With your guitar at full volume it gets a great break-up. Back off the volume just a bit and it cleans up nicely. I leally love this amp. Match it with one of my Pauls and it really cuts through a mix..
My Effects Rig
My Pedalboard Here are the effects currently strapped to my pedal board. From left to right:
  • Deluxe Memory Man - If you have never used one of these, you do not know what you are missing. It is a fantastic delay pedal. I love the giant knobs as I can basically drive it with my feet while playing.
  • Boss CE-1 - This is the benchmark for chorus. It gives your sound a thick lush chorus ala Alex Lifeson in the 70s. The tremelo is also very nice.
  • Fulltone Full Drive II - This is great vintage sounding pedal. It gives you a drive and boost switch that really warms up any tube amp. Great pedal.
  • Vox Clyde Wah - Not much to say about this one. Gotta have my wah.
  • On the top is Boss tuner. I also use it to power the FD and the wah. Works great.

OK, that is it for my current gear. Thanks for reading. If you ever have any questions about tone, drop me a line. I always love to hear from other musicians!
